Comet on the Horizon
Click on the image above for the better large view. I had an opportunity to make a photograph of comet PANSTARRS this weekend. From here it currently appears just after sunset and just above the thick atmospheric haze on the horizon. I went to the beach to get a view that would be unobstructed by trees or buildings. I took a few wide shots when I got there and got setup. I thought I would take a few closer shots of the comet but it quickly sank into the atmospheric murk above the waters of the Gulf and I decided it wasn’t worth changing lenses at that point. I did stay awhile though and made some artistic time-lapse images of the incoming tide by moonlight. There was a beach carnival going on to the north of me and later in the evening they set off some nice fireworks which I also made some images of.
While We’re Here, Let’s Take a Dip in the Pool
The water in the swimming pool at the home I photographed the other day looked the coolest and most inviting of just about any I’ve seen. As I sit behind my computer processing the images from the assignment I keep daydreaming about how refreshing it would be to jump in for a swim.
Tiny Stream
I always enjoy returning to this little stream with my camera because the vivid color of the algae that covers the rocks contrasts so well with the autumn leaves and the sky color that the moving water reflects.
I Love My Job!
Doing this for a living sure beats sitting behind a desk. It’s not always this dirty though, in fact right after this shoot I rinsed myself and the cameras off, (they are waterproof) changed into a suit and shot a wedding. Never a dull moment.
Evening at the Pool
Just a night shot from the same photo session by the same pool as the food shot from yesterday.
An Evening by the Pool
I haven’t had the opportunity to shoot anything for myself in forever. I am shooting a lot for clients though. I have been going through archives from my guided photo tours lately and looking for images that I never published to post here. Today I am breaking from my norm and posting something I shot this week for a client. Its from a twilight series I did for an ad to be published in the duPont Registry.
Incoming Tide
As you can probably tell, a lot of my jobs lately have put me near the water. I’ve been happy to take advantage of some photo ops for myself after the shooting for clients is over with.
Shiny Shoreline
A bonus effect happens when you get down at a really low angle on wet sand – the sand becomes highly reflective. If it’s wet enough it becomes a virtual mirror.
Driftwood
low angle is one of my favorite perspectives to incorporate into a composition. Presenting a subject in a very different way than from eye-level helps give it more visual impact.
Down by the Seaside
Down is certainly the key word here. I got all the way down to the ground with the camera to get a perspective that has some visual impact.
Making a Splash
I went out to this ski show over the weekend and photographed some of it just for fun. Since it was just for fun I decided to make it an exercise for myself. I put an old 200mm lens on the camera and practiced tracking focus manually with it. I enjoyed the challenge of trying keep the fast-moving skiers sharp the old-school way with just my eyes and hands instead of with microcomputers and motors.
Fake Flowers Floating in a Fountain
Just one of those little scenes that caught my eye while shooting at an event this weekend.
Moonlight Flight
I have been shooting like mad lately for paying clients and almost not at all for myself. I think Memorial Day was the only day I’ve had off in about 7 weeks. So I’m still mostly just grabbing random old shots out of my computer to post here until that changes. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though because otherwise some shots like this that I actually sort of like might stay buried in my archives and not ever get seen by anyone.
