Film Noir
When it comes to personal work I have been shooting good old-fashioned analog film a lot lately. Way more than digital. Almost all black and white and all with a variety of antique cameras: medium format, 35mm, and Polaroid. I finally had some time yesterday to scan several weeks worth of negatives and Polaroid prints so for the next week or two I will be posting some of the highlights here for you. Today’s entry was taken with a medium format camera at dusk in the park near where I live.
The Best Camera to Use…
…is any one you can get your hands on when a picture presents itself. In this case – my cell phone.
Tampa Bay Twilight
It’s hard to pass up a nice sunset when you have a camera handy. It’s a subject that never gets old. This was the view from the back yard of one of the homes I was photographing recently.
Mountain Sunset
As I continue to scan some of my old slides to present here in my journal I’ve come to realize that I miss the rich, saturated colors that I could get by deliberately underexposing Ektachrome film. With the right subject matter, a light to moderately underexposed slide looked terrific right out of the camera. No processing software necessary, just shine some light through it and enjoy.
Comet on the Horizon
Click on the image above for the better large view. I had an opportunity to make a photograph of comet PANSTARRS this weekend. From here it currently appears just after sunset and just above the thick atmospheric haze on the horizon. I went to the beach to get a view that would be unobstructed by trees or buildings. I took a few wide shots when I got there and got setup. I thought I would take a few closer shots of the comet but it quickly sank into the atmospheric murk above the waters of the Gulf and I decided it wasn’t worth changing lenses at that point. I did stay awhile though and made some artistic time-lapse images of the incoming tide by moonlight. There was a beach carnival going on to the north of me and later in the evening they set off some nice fireworks which I also made some images of.
Wet Brick Streets
I was doing some product photography in my studio yesterday and when I walked outside to leave I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was raining. I wound up being quite delayed in getting to my truck because I can never resist shooting in the streets outside my studio when it’s raining. I was soaked through to the skin by the time I was finally ready to drive home but I was happy to have had the chance to do some creative work just for myself for a change.
Latest Magazine Cover
I love to shoot during the blue hour after sunset and it’s become one of the specialties that I’m known for in the luxury home market. In addition to the cover I have dozens of images printed throughout the magazine including several more of this home. A different set of my images from this home is being published both inside and on the cover of a duPont Registry magazine in early 2013 as well.
Bright Lights
I photographed this brightly illuminated house on a foggy evening last week. The motion of the fog that was above the house made an interesting sky backdrop in this scene due to the long time exposures that I combined for this image.
Twilight View
Today I’m posting something from a current project. This image is one from a recent shoot that is a possibility for the cover of an upcoming issue of the duPont Registry.
Desolate Sunset
I’m finally shooting in New Mexico again and so far it’s been a terrific trip. This is from the first evening out here. After arriving on the plane and getting settled in I took my group out to the Ojito Wilderness for a sunset shoot. I climbed to the top of a very tall clay mound in search of a good vantage point to shoot the sunset and encountered this scene as I approached the summit. Lucky me.
Evening at the Pool
Just a night shot from the same photo session by the same pool as the food shot from yesterday.
Another View
Yesterday I posted a view of the pool so I figured today I may as well post an image of the front of the house.
