Night Light
At night I left my curtains open, turned off all the lights in my room and let the Luxor be my night light.
Comet on the Horizon
Click on the image above for the better large view. I had an opportunity to make a photograph of comet PANSTARRS this weekend. From here it currently appears just after sunset and just above the thick atmospheric haze on the horizon. I went to the beach to get a view that would be unobstructed by trees or buildings. I took a few wide shots when I got there and got setup. I thought I would take a few closer shots of the comet but it quickly sank into the atmospheric murk above the waters of the Gulf and I decided it wasn’t worth changing lenses at that point. I did stay awhile though and made some artistic time-lapse images of the incoming tide by moonlight. There was a beach carnival going on to the north of me and later in the evening they set off some nice fireworks which I also made some images of.
Moon in the Moss
I’ve been working virtually nonstop on assignments for clients for the last few weeks and haven’t done much shooting just for myself. I stopped the other night on the way home from a location shoot and took a few minutes to just chill out and take a few snapshots of the full moon rising into a hazy night sky.
Winter Moon
I never pass up an opportunity to photograph the moon when it has a ring around it. I saw this ring last night so I grabbed a camera and strolled out into the neighborhood to find a good vantage point to shoot it. I don’t know why, but ever since I was a child I was fascinated with the phenomenon of lunar halos and now I’m happy that I have the means to capture their special beauty and share.
Wet Brick Streets
I was doing some product photography in my studio yesterday and when I walked outside to leave I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was raining. I wound up being quite delayed in getting to my truck because I can never resist shooting in the streets outside my studio when it’s raining. I was soaked through to the skin by the time I was finally ready to drive home but I was happy to have had the chance to do some creative work just for myself for a change.
Holiday Halo
As you can see from my recent postings I’ve been turning my camera to the night skies a lot recently. Christmas Eve was no exception, I came home from visiting with family and as I walked across my front yard I looked up and saw this wonderful halo around the moon. I have a portfolio of moon halo images that I’ve made over the years and this is another nice one for me to add to my collection.
Looking Up
For the first time in what seems like forever I took a night off from processing images for clients and spent some time in the woods. I brushed the dust off my old telescope and and really enjoyed looking at the cosmos for a change instead of looking at a computer screen. This image shows a clear sky full of stars and planets through a stand of trees that were illuminated by the flickering light of my campfire. Jupiter can be seen straight up through the trees in the constellation of Taurus.

Bright Lights
I photographed this brightly illuminated house on a foggy evening last week. The motion of the fog that was above the house made an interesting sky backdrop in this scene due to the long time exposures that I combined for this image.
