Abstract Skaters

While photographing a roller derby bout I had the idea to experiment with making some motion-blur and abstract images with one of my cameras. This is one of the abstract images that I made at the roller rink on Saturday night.

The Fish Market

35mm black and white film. A little patience paid off here. After buying some fresh red snapper and grouper filets here I waited outside with my camera knowing that eventually someone would stand in the right place inside and make a nice silhouette. As a lucky bonus the boat entered the left side of the frame at exactly the same time creating a nice balance with the light colored marina in the background on the right side of the frame.

The Best Camera to Use…

…is any one you can get your hands on when a picture presents itself. In this case – my cell phone.

Mountain Sunset

As I continue to scan some of my old slides to present here in my journal I’ve come to realize that I miss the rich, saturated colors that I could get by deliberately underexposing Ektachrome film. With the right subject matter, a light to moderately underexposed slide looked terrific right out of the camera. No processing software necessary, just shine some light through it and enjoy.

Winter Moon

I never pass up an opportunity to photograph the moon when it has a ring around it. I saw this ring last night so I grabbed a camera and strolled out into the neighborhood to find a good vantage point to shoot it. I don’t know why, but ever since I was a child I was fascinated with the phenomenon of lunar halos and now I’m happy that I have the means to capture their special beauty and share.

Holiday Halo

As you can see from my recent postings I’ve been turning my camera to the night skies a lot recently. Christmas Eve was no exception, I came home from visiting with family and as I walked across my front yard I looked up and saw this wonderful halo around the moon. I have a portfolio of moon halo images that I’ve made over the years and this is another nice one for me to add to my collection.
