Volcanoes, lava flows, and caves: We will make our way
to County Road 42 also known as Chain of Craters Road. It is a
rugged dirt road (impassable under certain conditions) that
along a twenty mile stretch winds it's way among thirty
volcanoes. We will see volcanic cinder cones, vast lava fields,
and will hike in the Big Tubes area. This region has over 17
miles of accessible lava tubes, the largest network in North
America. Our hike will include Caterpillar Collapse, a large
tube with a collapsed ceiling that got it's name through it's
appearance from the air, Big Skylight Cave, Four Windows Cave,
and Seven Bridges, a cave that left several narrow arches of
lava intact when it's ceiling collapsed. Those who wish may
enter Four Windows Cave and see the moss gardens that are
actually micro-habitats for many unique plants and insects.
Further into the cool, dark recesses of the cave you may see a
form of algae called cave slime that actually makes the walls
shimmer and sparkle when illuminated by a flashlight. For a
sense of scale look for the hiker in the white t-shirt standing
above the cave in the adjacent photo. The cave is actually much
larger than it appears here because the entrance is piled high
with rubble from the collapsed section. Historic Old Town: We
visit the historic district where you can meander among some of
the oldest intact buildings in the state with a watchful eye for
photogenic details and browse to your hearts content among the
countless specialty shops. |
