Mesa By Moonlight

This image is one of several that were taken in Chaco Canyon by only the light of the moon after we finished eating our picnic dinner in the cool night air of the desert. From a photographic standpoint the moon is simply a reflector that bounces sunlight back to earth. Leave the camera's shutter open long enough for a moonlight scene and the result is in reality a sunlight exposure. The added bonus is that the stars in the sky are recorded at the same time and the end result is both striking and surreal at the same time. This was a fifteen-second long exposure and the movement of the clouds during that time enhanced the surreal look of the image even more.
